Santa Maria di Castellabate you have a lot of possibilities:
- the Cilento Coastline
Going south along the beautiful coastline from Santa Maria
di Castellabate you will drive through a lot of picturesque
villages, for instance Acciaroli (the Hemingway
town), Pioppi (Il Museo del Mare –
Seawater museum), Pisciotta (the olive oil
town), Marina di Casalvelino and Marina
di Ascea (golden beaches), Velia
(Greek :Elea, ruins from 540 years before Christ, famous for
the antique school of philosophy (Xenophane, Parmenide, Zenone
and medicine), Palinuro (let a boat take
you out to the Blue Grotto), the charming Marina di
Camerota…
- the Cilento Inland
The town Roscigno Vecchia was left in a hurry
at the beginning of 1900, because the inhabitants feared a
landslide that never arrived…You can also find the grottos
of Castelcivita and the oasis WWF of Fellitto…
-Go to the Carthusian monastery of San Lorenzo in
Padula (1306) and the “Angel” -
grottos of Pertosa, also visit Teggiano
(antique churches)
- Agropoli
Only 11 km north of Santa Maria you will find the city of
Agropoli, with an old town that remembers the Saracen’s
siege during the medieval period. Going up the broad steps
from the modern part of the city towards the old town, you
feel like going back in time…
- Paestum
You definitely go back in time when you visit Paestum, only
20 km north of Santa Maria. This antique City of Temples was
constructed by the Greeks around 600 years before Christ and
was one of the richest states of the Magna Graecia, called
Posedonia… In Paestum you must also stop at a “Caseificio”
to buy the world’s best day fresh mozzarella (buffalo’s
cheese) !
- Salerno
60 km from Santa Maria you will find Salerno, with it’s
busy streets and nice sea promenade. There is a pedestrian
shopping area that leads into the old town.
- The Amalfi Coast
Going north along the coastline after Salerno, you will find
yourself on the “Divine Coast”. It will take you
the day to drive through the beautiful villages on this stunning,
curved coastline : Vietri sul mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori,
Ravello (359 m above the sea, classical music concerts), Amalfi
(Cathedral) and Positano (jet-set), before you finally return
to the much more quiet Castellabate…
- The island of Capri can be reached with
a ferry from Salerno : very beautiful and very busy
- The city of Pompei that was ruined from
the volcano Vesuvius in the year 79,is of great historical
interest!
- From San Marco di Castellabate you can rent a boat or go
on a boat excursion along the coast or admire the little island
of Licosa, where the myth of the enchanted song of the mermaid
Leucosia is still fascinating…
- Trekking from San Marco (port) towards Punta Licosa or from
Santa Maria (Tresino) towards Agropoli or up to the medieval
town Castellabate. |

Practical
information
There are local busses from Santa Maria to Castellabate, Agropoli
and Salerno. From the train station in Agropoli there are
trains to Salerno, Naples, Roma... A travel agent situated
in Santa Maria organize excursions, for people that do not
want to drive themselves or that would like to have a guided
trip.
In Santa Maria there are two agents that rent out bikes, mopeds
and cars. To rent a car locally or pick up and drop off services
